Signs of Bad Motor Mounts

Engines have thousands of small, moving parts and the slightest malfunction can cause major damage to your vehicle. One small part that makes a major contribution to your engine health is a motor mount. Motor mounts stabilize, align, and hold your engine in place inside the engine compartment. They come in a variety of shapes and sizes and work best for particular types of engines but they are all made to mount the engine to the chassis and dampen engine vibration. Not only are these mounts critical but there are some tell-all signs of a bad motor mount that you should be aware of.

Motor mounts are typically made of rubber. Metal motor mounts are used to withstand force and torque generated by the engine. Rubber motor mounts are used to absorb and dampen the vibrations generated by the engine. These small parts do a lot of heavy lifting in your vehicle. When there is a problem with your motor mounts it will be obvious and can lead to serious damage to your engine.

Excessive Vibrations

Problematic motor mounts will typically show signs that will let you know that there is an issue and that should be serviced. The first obvious sign of bad motor mounts is; excessive engine vibration. Motor mounts are made to hold your engine in place and absorb vibration. If your engine is shaking in place, it’s probably a sign of bad motor mounts. In extreme cases, the excessive vibration can be felt when sitting in the vehicle, particularly from the passenger side.

It’s important to catch this sign early. As the engine vibrates, it will shake further and further out of place and could result in permanent damage.

Visible and Audible Signs

The next obvious signs will be things you can see or hear. Take a look at your engine and make sure that it is aligned properly. Motor mounts are made to hold your engine in correct alignment, so improper alignment is an indication that your motor mounts might be bad. You can also look for the height of each corner of the engine, to make sure it is level. If any part of your engine is sagging, tilting, or drooping, it could mean your motor mounts are bad. If your engine is not aligned properly, it could result in an engine block, meaning your vehicle could stop in its tracks.

The most common sign of a bad motor mount is excessive noise. Any clanking or banging that you don’t hear normally could be a sign of bad motor mounts. Anytime you hear new noises coming from your engine it’s usually an indication that something is wrong. Noise can be caused by parts of your engine making contact with part of your chassis and can lead to expensive repairs.
