It’s already been a record-breaking season for pollen in North Carolina this year! Earlier this year, the state saw its two highest tree pollen counts since North Carolina officials beganmeasuring in 1999.
Not only can all that pollen cause havoc on your sinuses but it can also damage your car’s paint. Obviously the best way to handle this problem is to keep your car parked in a garage or
other covered area. Of course, that’s easier said than done.
So here’s a few tips for when you’re trying to get that irritating yellow stuff off your vehicle:
Don’t use a dry cloth.
Don’t try to dust off or wipe pollen off your car with a dry cloth. This will only damage your paint. Pollen actually contains tiny spikes that can damage your paint if wiped off.
And don’t wait for the rain to do the work for you. When mixed with water, pollen becomes acidic and can further damage your vehicle.
Wash your car regularly.
Pollen that remains on your car for too long can settle into tiny cracks in your paint and eat away at the topcoat over time. Head over to your local car wash to make sure those pesky pollen
particles are carefully removed from your car’s surface.
Can’t get to a car wash? If you’re washing it yourself, start by rinsing your car with water to get rid of loose pollen. Then use a quality car wash solution to help break down the pollen and
make it easier to remove. And be sure to use a soft microfiber cloth or sponge.
Use a foam cannon.
You can also use a foam cannon to help remove pollen. A foam cannon uses soap that soaks the car and loosens debris, like pollen, dirt, bugs, and more.
You can get a foam cannon from most local hardware and auto stores, like Lowes, Ace, and Advance Auto Parts.
Use wax or a sealant.
By applying a high-quality wax or sealant to your car’s paint, you will help pollen slide off more easily when washing your car. This will also extend the life of your car’s paint job, and protect it
from the sun, rocks, bird droppings, and more.
Clean those windshield wipers.
Be sure to clean your windshield wipers weekly. That will help prevent pollen from building up and eventually smearing across your windshield–making it even more difficult to remove!
It’s not just the outside of your car that needs attention. Be sure to replace your engine and cabin air filters regularly to help keep pollen out!
