Ask most people what sets a BMW or Mercedes apart from the car in the next lane, and they’ll mention the badge, maybe the interior, maybe how it handles on the highway. What they usually don’t mention — because most drivers never think about it — is the suspension underneath them, quietly doing the work that makes all of that possible.

On a lot of European cars, you’ll still find coil-over suspension doing the job it’s done for decades. The concept hasn’t changed much because it doesn’t need to: a steel coil spring sits around a shock absorber or strut, and together they soak up bumps while keeping the tires in contact with the road. It’s mechanical, it’s straightforward, and when something goes wrong, a good technician can usually figure out what and where fairly quickly.
This is the setup you’ll find on a lot of the more driver-focused European models. BMW, Audi, Volkswagen, and Mini all lean on coil-overs in various trims because the handling payoff is real.
Durable doesn’t mean indestructible, though. Over enough miles, shocks and struts start to lose their damping ability. Springs can sag or, less often, crack outright. Bushings harden and wear with age and exposure. So if your car’s started bouncing more than it should after a bump, the tires are wearing unevenly, you’re hearing clunks over rough pavement, the handling feels looser than it used to, or the car’s leaning harder into turns, those are all signs worth paying attention to. The upside is that coil-over repairs tend to be pretty manageable, particularly if you get them looked at before the wear turns into something bigger.
The High-Tech Option: Air Ride Suspension
Air suspension is a different animal entirely. Instead of steel springs, you’ve got rubber air springs (air bags) that inflate and deflate based on input from a compressor, an air reservoir, sensors, and a control module. Rather than a fixed spring rate, the system is constantly adjusting on the fly to keep ride height correct and comfort optimized.
This is the setup you’ll find in cars like the BMW 7 Series, X5, and X7; the Mercedes S-Class and GLS; and the Audi A6, A8, Q7, and Q8. A lot of SUVs use it too, since it helps with towing and automatically levels the vehicle no matter how much cargo or how many passengers are on board.
Why people love it:
The ride quality is genuinely different — that “floating” feel luxury buyers pay for is almost entirely down to air suspension. The car levels itself automatically regardless of load, and on many SUVs you can raise the ride height for rough terrain or lower it for aerodynamics and easier entry. Some systems even stiffen automatically under hard cornering and soften back up on the highway, which is a neat trick most drivers never even notice happening.
Why it’s not all upside:
More parts means more that can go wrong, and air suspension has a lot more parts than a coil spring. Air springs leak. Compressors fail. Ride height sensors go bad. Air lines develop leaks, valve blocks fail, and control modules can throw problems of their own. Unlike a worn-out shock, which mostly just makes for an uncomfortable ride, an air suspension fault can affect ride height and handling almost immediately.
Signs Your Air Suspension Is in Trouble
These problems tend to creep in gradually rather than announcing themselves all at once, so it’s worth knowing what to watch for:
- The car sits noticeably lower overnight — one corner or the whole vehicle. That’s a classic sign of a leaking air spring or air line.
- The compressor seems to be running constantly, which usually means it’s working overtime to compensate for a leak somewhere.
- A suspension warning light comes on. Modern BMWs, Mercedes, and Audis monitor this stuff constantly — don’t ignore the light.
- The ride suddenly feels stiffer or bouncier than normal, which suggests the system isn’t adjusting the way it should.
- One side of the car sits lower than the other — that one needs a look right away.
Put off dealing with any of these, and you’re putting extra strain on the compressor and other components that are expensive to replace.
