While drivers have always loved how Volkswagens perform, there is still a common misconception that Volkswagen models are especially difficult (and expensive) to maintain and repair.
In large part, this belief can be attributed to the well-known fact that foreign car parts can be a little more challenging to track down. Plus, with particularly complex engineering, European vehicles often require specialized knowledge for proper repair.
While these understandings are true, that DOES NOT mean Volkswagen service costs are really all that much higher than that of other domestic cars…especially if you get service from an affordable, experienced Volkswagen Repair Specialist.
Is Volkswagen maintenance expensive?
No! At least not nearly as expensive as many people think.
But how much does a Volkswagen really cost to own and maintain? While some of this will depend on your local climate and environment and your own driving habits, there are still some good estimates out there. The annual repair cost of a Volkswagen averages at about $676 a year, according to RepairPal estimates. This isn’t too far off from the overall average yearly cost of domestic vehicle maintenance, resting at $652.
In fact, YourMechanic found that 10-year Volkswagen maintenance costs were less than those for many other popular domestic brands, including Ford, Kia, Subaru, Huyundai, and Jeep.
Is it necessary to take my Volkswagen to the dealership for service?
Absolutely not! Many Volkswagen owners opt into dealership warranties for the first few years after buying their car, so in some cases, it may make more sense to take full advantage of those cost savings while you have them.
But once those warranties are up, the steep dealership prices are most definitely going to make you question whether there is a more cost-effective maintenance and service option available.
Even if your vehicle is under warranty, you still aren’t required to bring it into a Volkswagen dealership for service. Contrary to common belief, car dealers CAN NOT legally force you to bring your car to the dealership to maintain a valid warranty.
So, if you’d rather get your car serviced by a trustworthy independent European Repair Specialist, just make sure you hold onto all those receipts of repair and oil changes. If the Volkswagen dealership ever questions the validity of your repairs, this proof will be essential!
Where can I get inexpensive Volkswagen service?
Picking an alternative service provider isn’t quite as simple as searching on Google for the nearest repair shop. You will need to consider a few things…
- Are they Volkswagen experts?
- Do they have access to the proper OEM car parts?
- Do they provide top-tier customer service? (Be sure to check Google reviews)
- Do they offer affordable prices?
Luckily, the answer to ALL of those questions is a resounding “YES!” when it comes to the team over here at Performance Auto Specialists. Want to learn more about our team? Click here!
