Common Air Conditioning Issues

common air conditioning issues auto specialists Air conditioning button inside a car. Cold, heat control concept

Having air conditioning in your car is one of those things that you don’t realize how much you’ll miss it until it’s gone. The most common causes of a broken air conditioner are compressor issues or leaks. If the air is blowing but not cold, you could have a clogged filter, radiator trouble, cooling fan problem, or you may just need to recharge your A/C. Here’s how to diagnose the problem:

Cool, Not Cold

You may notice that your air conditioning is blowing like it should, but the air is not as cold as it should be. If your car’s air conditioning is only blowing moderately cool air, check to see that the cooling fans on the radiator or condenser are running when the air conditioning is on. Look for any restrictions that could keep air from passing over the condenser and check the cabin air filter to ensure that it is not clogged.

Start with the A/C Compressor

It is easiest to begin at the compressor when diagnosing an air conditioning issue. Turn your A/C on max cool, set the fans high, and make sure the clutch is engaging on the compressor. If the clutch is engaging and disengaging rapidly, the refrigerant may be low. However, if the clutch is not engaging, use a voltmeter to check for voltage getting to the compressor. If there is voltage, the clutch may be bad.

Leaks

If the pressure is low, there may be a leak. You can use a UV A/C leak detection kit to find a leak. You should check the following:

  • Check all fittings to verify that they are secure
  • Check hose manifolds on the compressor
  • Check the front seal and o-rings that seal the pressure switches on the back of some compressors
  • Check where the hoses are crimped onto the fittings
  • Check the Schrader Valves
  • Check for pinholes in the condenser
  • Check where the evaporator drains condensation with UV light
